Growing Tobacco

I have been gardening for the past four years. I have grown all the normal things, tomatoes, peppers, and various spices. Every year I like to try and add one thing that is out of the ordinary. Last year was a lot of medicinal herbs. The year before that was goji berries. The year before that was hops. This year I have planted four different varieties of tobacco. I picked up the seeds from horizonherbs.com. Did you know that one gram of tobacco seeds contains roughly 10,000 to 13,000 seeds, and each tobacco plant can produce 12 to 15 grams of seed. That’s a lot of seeds. Tobacco seeds are very tiny. Instead of starting the plants indoors I decided to sow the seeds directly into the ground. The risk of doing this is that the wind might blow those tiny little seeds away. So far there is one variety that has already sprouted. The plan is to continue to watch which one grabs hold the best and start to grow more of that one. If I can get just one plant to make it I should have enough seed to get a very decent crop next year. I will keep you guys updated on the progress. Have any of you ever grown your own tobacco??? I would love to hear about it. Leave a comment. Have a great day.

    • Thanks Greg. I’m trying a very low maintenance gardening technique. Hopefully I will get something out of it. At least knowledge for next year.
